I travelled by myself to Kashmir and stayed as a guest of Royal Group of Houseboats for 5 nights, what a fantastic place to stay ,at no time did I feel unsafe in Kashmir. From the moment I contacted the company the service was so professional, my emails were promptly replied to, I was met at the airport and truly welcomed at the houseboat by Mr Dinn who's service was exceptional. My room was comfortable and the whole houseboat was beautifully furnished. My guide AJ was always on time to pick me up for the tours I had booked and was very knowledgeable about Kashmir's history anything I requested to see or do he was able to organise. The houseboats position on the Lake takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Srinagar and a visit to the early morning markets by shikara is a must.A truly wonderful trip.

What a fantastic place to stay! Very comfortable accommodation, nice rooms, warm lounge and dining area. We stayed in early November so the weather was a little chilly. Mr Din lit the fire in our room each night and offered to do it in the mornings before we got up also! There are electric blankets on the beds. The houseboats have wonderful views, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent.

We stayed at the Royal Palace HouseBoat for 1 day and the experience was great! The house boat was lovely with its carvings on the roof and lovely wood carved furniture. The rooms and stay gave a feeling that we are staying in a luxurious place. The boat had a nice living room with fire place; large dining area, pantry and 5 suites with dressing room and bathroom with bathtub which we normally see at a 3 star hotel. The rooms were spacious. The concierge and staff were cordial and we enjoyed our stay at this houseboat.

We stayed in the Young Crystal Palace houseboat for three days where we were looked after in the kindest, friendliest way by Gulam and 'Moon'. They could not have provided better service and attention. Kashmir has been on my bucket list forever and although I'm sure the whole Lake could do with some TLC, and the environment has been considerably downgraded since the heydays on these boats in the 70's, this is still a marvellous experience. The furnishings, the food, the ambience are really of very good quality. Beds are firm but comfortable, water is hot, lounge and verandah very inviting and the whole concept, thoroughly appealing. The Shikara ride to and from the boats takes you away from the hustle and horns of downtown Srinagar to a peaceful, scenic, enticing environment in a matter of minutes. In India this type of serenity is very hard to find - this is a great place to chill out and unwind after the chaos. The only drawback was the constant appearance of hawkers selling all types of wares and the favourites of the staff are invited onboard which is a little annoying.

We are staying on House Boat Royal Palace, which is on a quiet mooring among a group of five luxury houseboats. The boat is lovely, with five ensuite (with bathtubs!) bedrooms - so its likely you will share. Ghulam looks after us very well, and the cook produces delicious food. Our view is of lotus flowers, with pond herons, kingfishers, moorhens, teal and some little bobbing divers, called pinditch in Kashmiri. Kites soar above and the mountains provide a picturesque backdrop - this is not to say its always quiet - there are often lots of noisy people about, including sellers of Kashmiri wears in shakiras. Still, its quieter than most places in the subcontinent! Brilliant!
