Located nearly 28 kms further down from Mahabaleshwar, Tapola is still not commercialsed. It still remains very raw and un-touristy. The beautiful 90 km long Shivsagar lake at Tapola is surrounded by magnificient hills and the drive from Mahabaleshwar is lovely. We wished to have a holiday during the long republic day weekend and knew that Mahabaleshwar and its hotels would be brimming over with tourists, not to mention the high holiday season tariff. Hence we chose to have a different experience at Tapola. It took us nearly an hour to drive down to Mahabaleshwar Agro Village from the Mahabaleshwar bus stand. The owner Mr Sanjay Utekar guided us with directions on the phone and also assured us that lunch would be kept for us even though we were very late. The road to Tapola is curvy but good. The last few kms stretch when u get down from the main road to reach the agro village is a kuccha road but manageable. The resort is away from it all. Bang on the lake, they have tents with attached western/Indian bathrooms and few tents without attached bathrooms. The tents are not luxurious but very basic. Blankets/fan was provided in the tent. The bathroom was clean. Tap water was available. The bathroom is a brick and mortar structure. Flush was working well. Hot water in the morning was given through buckets since the solar heater was not working. There is a fully functional kitchen offering veg and non veg food. We were all vegetarians. The cook would ask our preference even though all the tents were occupied. The food was homely and had good taste. Even the breakfast of poha/upma was very tasty. Motor Boating on the lake was not included in the price. Kayaks were provided by the resort in the package. It was our first time kayaking and we enjoyed the serenity of the lake in the early morning paddling away. There are no happening things to do once you reach here. This place is strictly for nature lovers and those who do not mind a peaceful holiday. The evening time at the lake was mesmerising. Morning walk along the road from the resort was peaceful and followed the tapola lake. The resort has few indoor games and is in the process of installing some slides etc for children. They do have rifle shooting and archery for us to try our hands on. We were also taken to a strawberry farm nearby and had the wonderful experience of picking strawberries with our own hands to take back with us. The service is warm. Please note that this is not a professionally run place. The staff are simple villagers trying their best to cater to us city folk. The village ladies who were helping in the kitchen even allowed us to try our hands at making rice bhakris in their open kitchen. The tents are at 3 levels. There are steps leading down to the dining area and further down to the lake. The last stretch down to the boating area does not have steps but is a kucha rasta. People with joint problems and senior citizens may consider this. There is no proper jetty to board the boat. Senior citizens in our group had difficulty climbing in but very sportingly managed it. The management should look into this basic need since the whole concept of the resort is being on the banks of the lake. The owner is in the process of improving the facilities but for now the place is quite rustic. The resort does not have a large property to take walks in. Inspite of this, our group had a good time and have taken back some lovely memories of the trip.
