Thenedar was our first stop in the recent Himachal vacation. It is not very far from Shimla, but far enough to avoid typical tourist crowd to ensure privacy as well as very nice views of the valley below and Shivaliks or Lower Himalayas around. This is especially a good option if your itinerary is up north towards Sojha/Tirthan Valley or Sangla. Part of the Banjara group, Banjara Orchard Retreat, is a nice small property nestled among the Apple Orchards of the Thanedar valley. One has to climb down from the main road to reach the property, which consists of some 10 rooms of various types like Log Cabins, Classic Rooms and some Suites. Central to these rooms is the common dining and recreational hall. The whole setup is very aesthetically done in wood with great views all around. The day we reached Thanedar was one of the coldest we have experienced till date. It was raining right from Chandigarh with heavy snowfall in the upper reaches including Haatu Peak located very close to Thanedar. As soon as we reached the resort, we were rushed in a common hall that had been warmed up in advance and were served hot water & tea. It was a warm welcome in a true sense :-) We had booked the larger log cabin for our stay. But since we were travelling with young kids, Mr. Prakash Thakur (owner) suggested we check out their suite instead. Given its lower ceiling and thicker walls, this room was indeed much warmer than the log cabin and we camped that night in the Cherry Suite instead. We would like to thank Mr. Thakur for his warmth and considerate nature. The Cherry Suite that we stayed in is located on the extreme left on first floor as one enters the property. It is a very comfortably done Suite with one bedroom and an adjoining siting room (with a sofa cum bed). Both the rooms were equipped with hot air blowers and had thick blankets. In addition, we were also provided with hot water bags in the night. All of this made our night really comfy given the bitter cold temperatures outside. The Suite opens in a small common balcony that offers great views of the valley and Haatu peak. Food was served in the central dining hall and was very tasty. Breakfast spread, though limited, was good with local varieties like Paranthas, homemade Apple juice and chutney, Jams etc. Staff here was very helpful and courteous. Mr. Prakash Thakur came over to check on things and to see if are comfortable. We really appreciate his hospitality and personal touch. We had planned to stop over again at Thanedar during our return journey, but cancelled it since kids wanted to extend their stay at Sangla. Although ours was a short stay, we found this place very welcoming and a great place as a holiday destination. We would certainly like to visit again sometime and def. recommend this property to fellow travellers.

The cottages are very comfortable & well done up, the view from the cottages of the valley is very good. However the food is avoidable, best is if you eat out. Best time to go is when cherries are ripe, they are simply to die for!!!

Couple of hours from Shimla on the old Tibet Road is this gem. 12 - 15 rooms, overlooking a valley full of orchards. Lovely walks and treks around the place. A compact activity centre. Great views especially at sunset and night. Bonfires. Delicious food. And quite simply awesome service by the team led by Sharmaji. This a nature place so no TVs in rooms. Rooms are neat, spacious though not luxurious. But with the bounty of nature around who needs that?

Great Food and very comfortable acco. Bang on the road in Thanedar and ample parking space for your SUV. The tea time discussion with the fellow travelers is also very good. The bonfire lit in the evening to enjoy the weather is great.
