Despite an email confirmation the week before our arrival, when we arrived the maid told us there were no bookings and the owner had gone to church. I showed her the email and she contacted the owner. We had to wait outside in the sweltering heat with 2 12yr old children without being offered as much as a drink. When he finally arrived he told us that because it was Easter weekend he had no staff. We were clearly not welcome and our room was prepared in a rush. All the owner was concerned about was keeping us out of his property as much as possible and us paying him the outrageous INR 6000 as soon as we arrived. I asked him to book us a taxi to the airport for the following morning but he refused to do so and he had already left for church the next day when we were up. We really struggled to get a taxi not knowing the area. I was extremely disappointed with the owner's attitude and will feed back to Lonely Planets where I learnt of this homestay.

Old colonial style heritage house situated in the centre of the city. Well maintained and clean. Big room with excellent beds, mosquito nets, The owner, Mr. Roy is the perfect host. He can give you any advice. Excellent south Indian breakfast and meals. Better than any hotel!

A lovely colonial home with a warm host in Mr.Roy. wouldn't wanna look any further if visiting again.. the location of being in the center of town but at the same having the comfort & peace of living in the woods.. Roy walked that extra mile to make it comfortable ensuring tea & local fresh banana chips being served after a hard day of work & a sumptuous breakfast at the proposed time for the day ahead.. Roy is a bookhouse of local knowledge & stories galore of his years in the army service.. Enjoy & soak into the hospitality of Varitakk..

Even though Col. Roy is gentle and charming, he keeps two beautiful Pomeranian dogs locked up most of the day and all night in a hot, humid cage and they are suffering very much. I tried to let them out whenever I could, actually bathed them (had never been bathed) they are starving for love and gentle loving care. His house keeper, Molly, dislikes them, kicks them, and keeps them locked up two days at a time without letting them out. They howl and are practically starving. Very disturbing and pretty much ruined my trip as I was deeply affected by how they treated these dogs. (I have been to India 6 times so I am not exaggerating) I did discuss this with him, but to no avail. So hard to witness.... DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. -

Original Heritage Bungalow built in 1850. A charming unique homestay, which despite being in the centre of the city and next to the Government Secretariat buildings, is very quiet at night (without the usual traffic, horns, sirens, and other city noise). Run by Colonel(Retd.) Roy Kuncheria (3rd Gurkhas,IA) and his able housekeeper Molly, Roy invites you into his third generation family home with a warmth and welcome as a member of his International Family. The Southern Indian breakfasts are great. The Bungalow has a front facing veranda and a lovely orchid garden. The rooms are clean uncluttered and bed firm and comfortable with fans and aircon. Roy goes out of his way to be helpful and for me personally above and beyond the call of duty! I left my passport after leaving for Kochi to fly back late evening the next day! Roy found a trusted person who hand carried my passport courtesy of Indian Railways to my hotel in Kochi so I was able to get my Air Asia flight.Thank you so much for that Roy! You are a star! We will be back! PLEASE NOTE I see a minority of people have given this homestay a low one star rating wrongly expecting it to be like a 5* hotel. If you want a new soulless 5* Hotel, with all mod cons, staff, pools, bars and restaurants please stay at the Hilton just down the road. This is for discerning travellers who like unique heritage, character, and old style charm mixed with Roy's warm, welcoming hospitality.
