Not for you if you if you want hot water for bathing or cold water to drink. Large room with air conditioning. Lovely, quiet location. Great swimming pool. Pleasant meals. I found the owner, who showed me round the estate, and welcomed me into his home, charming. The service could have been better - we asked for ice for the cool box in the car, but none was forthcoming [a problem for me with dehydration].

The Manager, Sharma, forgot to welcome us when we arrived. He walked away as my husband and driver carried our suitcases to our rooms. Not being used to being told to stay in my room to rest until we would be collected promptly at 3pm to take us to have a swim and then return us to our room 30 minutes later until exactly at 5pm when he would take us to meet the owner was an unpleasant shock. The owner was very nice but no idea how to handle guests who had to use his dining room for meals. We were ushered out by 8.30pm back to our rooms so his family could then eat, at least we had early nights. There is no alcohol served, fine by me as I don't drink, but only sterilised water was offered. Sharma stood over while we ate, removing any little dish as it was emptied, it was very off putting. There is no communal area to sit, internet is outside by the entrance to the private house. Although there is air con in the rooms we were told we would not need it and we saw there were no handheld controls so were unable to use it anyway. Meals, I warn anyone with a healthy appetite to take provisions, I was not impressed by chicken bones and tiny spoonfuls of spices with the usual rice. Cartoned juice when the country is full of great fruit is unacceptable. Bread that tasted like cardboard was inedible. The good point: luckily there was another couple staying so we could laugh this shocker off. A positive point: it would not take much to change this around as the rooms are fine, we did have hot showers, the pool just needs some comfortable chairs and a sunshade or two as there are none and it is too hot an area as it stands. There needs to be somewhere for guests to sit outside with shade and comfortable chairs and so they feel they are not encroaching on the family. And Sharma needs to remember guests names and treat us with politeness and not try to run it like an army camp.

Sharma, the new manager, and Prabu, the owner could not have been more accommodating and nice. They went to lengths to escort us around the property, give us directions, and provide meals for us. They provided fruit, toast and eggs to order for breakfast or dosas, if you prefer. They packed lunches for our day trip and provided nice evening meals. I would skip the soup (made from Knorr packet, I think) and stick to the Indian fare. The room is nice, albeit basic, and clean with a lovely balcony with a table, chairs, and kettle. The pool is gorgeous and a nice place to hang out and read. They have a workout room with a treadmill and a bicycle. Note that accommodations are not provided for drivers, but there is a town nearby. There is internet available at the main house, but not in the rooms. There are nice walks you can take around the farm/area. A day trip to Topslip and Parambiculum are easily accomplished from here, assuming you have some means of transportation.

The Banyan Farmstay is not for you if you if you want constant hot water or constant cold beer. For us, however, it was perfect. This secluded corner of Tamil Nadu.is peaceful, fruitful, and beautiful. The home cooked meals - including banana leaf lunches - are excellent, and the welcome from the Pradhu family members warm and personal. You will get to walk the farm with the dogs, spot some exotic birds, and, if you are lucky get a jeep tour of the property with Mr Pradhu. The pool is outstanding. This is a great place to lose yourself for a few days. And who would have thought there are so many coconuts in the world? Extra note: The Indira Ghandi Tiger sanctuary is very nearby. Be aware however, that you chance of seeing a tiger is about 1%. For some reason, they choose to stay away from the roadway along which you will be driven in a rickety bus. This is good news for the deer of which we saw plenty. The sanctuary is still worth a visit for the mountain scenery..

On arrival I sat down to an exquisite meal served on an expansive banana leaf and never looked back during my brief stay. I was taken on informative walks round the plantations and was lucky enough to spot an Asian Paradise Flycatcher. Prabhu, returning from a wedding, wanted to meet me and was most considerate about every aspect of my sojourn there. Unfortunately my excursion to Parambikulam was a bit of a disappointment, being crowded on a noisy bus of local tourists. Couldn't even get a window seat since the space for my legs was simply too small. Would definitely recommend alternative arrangements for visiting Parambikulam. But returning to the farm and its magnificent swimming pool washed all my cares away and I felt cosseted and mollycoddled once again.
