This is a historic palace, part of a complex still lived in by the royal family that was converted into a hotel in the 80s. We had one of six royal suites, comprising foyer, luggage room and kitchen, large sitting/bedroom, dressing room, bathroom and balcony with view over the lake perfect to watch the sun go down. Furniture is old/antique and in keeping with the room. There are just a few little touches of paint which need freshening up and need refurbishing. The door fastenings are the traditional brass bolts and padlocks which are hard on the fingers. The suite opened into a large courtyard with swimming pool and poolside tables where meals are served. There are also tables indoors in a restaurant beautifully furnished with miniatures and portraits of Maharajahs, and which had amazing views. Breakfast was an ample buffet. Staff are professional and helpful. Rooms were spotless and the beds and pillows very comfortable. A buggy can be called to transport you around the complex, but I dont recommend the sunset terrace restaurant at the other end of the complex. This is quite an amazing place to stay, and a perfect place to visit Udaipur from. Shops and market stalls are nearby and boat trips on the lake and to the beautiful palace island can be taken from nearby, also the palace museum can be visited. Udaipur also has beautiful gardens. To watch sunset from the balcony was a treat to remember.

A wonderful experience to be inside the palace. Great surroundings and that's what we paid for. The normal palace room was adequate but old with no views. Room 27 ... night 1 electrics went off about 8pm which we reported the next day. They were fixed but went again about 6pm ... took 40 minutes to repair. Lunch by the pool .. restaurant was empty but took 40 minutes for food to arrive ... waiter announces they had made the wrong salad so did I want that instead? No I didn't ... so my partner finished his lunch but the time my correct order arrived 20 minutes later. And this on a day when there were only 2 other tables eating ... who knows what it's like when its busy! Food was ok but not the best we've had! I'd say you definately pay for your surroundings here and not the room (believe the more extensive terrace rooms are better). Staff were wonderful. Especially the gentleman in the bar which is well worth a visit for its beauty.
