If you are looking for a place to stay that will truly make you feel as if you walk amongst the kings and queens of this historic city, this is the palace! The staff here quickly became fast friends with my father, and would make special dishes for him aside from what was available on the buffet menu. Although the rooms are in average condition, the palace itself is so stunning that you will not want to stay in the room for too long. At the very least, I would travel back here for the chai.

Had 4 nights here. Initially, it felt a bit impersonal after the family hotels we've enjoyed elsewhere, but the restaurant and housekeeping staff were very friendly and soon made us feel at home. And the views from room 10 were amazing. Good points: fantastic views from the room balcony and viewing area of the lake and James Bond Octopussy palace; balcony lovely for meals, reading, nature watching, photography; can see big bats, monkeys, the maharajas horses going out for exercise, amazing birds; go to the top of the hotel to see the sunsets; nice to have private sunbathing area next to room; pool area beautifully lit for supper (went there every night); amazing food; great musicians; lovely breakfasts in the room on that balcony. Bad points: bathroom old and tired; the loo plumbing made a drumming noise for ages; shower over bath not ideal; a hand-held shower would be a good addition; noisy but effective air conditioning; access probably difficult for those with mobility issues; the size of the whole palace complex (a lot of buildings are open to the public) makes it a bit impersonal sometimes. Overall, a pleasant place to stay.

We arrived at Shiv Niwas and greeted professionally, however as soon as we were shown our rooms (Palace room) everything went downhill from there. Very shoddy condition, peeling paint, bathroom doors falling apart, dodgy electric plugs, lampshades falling off, VERY noisy fridge, very poor finishing of all decor, useless and V noisy air con. The faults are too many to list. A huge padlock to fumble around with to secure the door. After drawing these faults to staff attention and explaining it was well below the standard we expected for INR12800 per night we were eventually offered another room in the sister hotel on the other side of Palace called Fateh Pradesh. This was only about 10% better as it had a view of the lake, everything else was equally as shoddy, topped off with a shower cubicle containing power outlet at 230V and a hairdryer (from circa 1970 the type found in a US motel). They quite clearly were not prepared to upgrade the room or show us an alternative (even though it's the low season and had availability) to try and smooth things over ..........0/10 for customer relations. Checked out as quickly as poss the next morning and moved to The Oberoi Udaivillas.

Lovely stay. Was here for the work related wedding and stayed here. Lovely views. Stayed in the suite rooms and nice view by the side of the lake and a mountain in front. Grand rooms and large in size for us to stay with a family. Amenities in the room were good. Nice place to stay with family as there is space to run around. Hotel has a good pool and great restaurants. Thoroughly impressed and would love to come back here again. Nice big beds for resting, place to work and nice balcony for a sit out. Surely coming back in the winters. Best part is being close to lake Pichhola and be in views or the many restaurants close to the lake, this is the place to be

The location of the hotel is very good, within the walls of the palace, and walking distance from attractions and shopping area. The suites facing the lake are very nice. Food is excellent (only breakfast is a little disappointing, lake of choices).
