If you are looking for place for activity like Goa and for 3 start amenities, then this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for calm and quite place where you can just enjoy the nature and where you want to enjoy the breach with not much people around, then this is definitely the place for you! The manger Harish is a good fellow and was always happy to help with our request. This is best value for money beach resort, according to me. I loved the place and I will be going back soon!! :)

I stayed at Akuna Matata for 2 nights during our Christmas Break and pleased with our Vacation to Udupi and places nearby. The property has 9 cottages of which 4 are by the sea, i.e : these cottages are relatively closer to sea than the other ones. Also, I understand that these cottages is exclusively for family.Typically, they are few yards away from the shore and one can feel strong waves, current especially during night and I would not recommend these cottages for weak hearted people. Cottages are spacious enough to accommodate 3 members , as I could see an extra bed in each one of them. Also, bathroom is generously large with decent fittings. However, I felt the place was lacking behind cleanliness and maintenance.Staff was very responsive for whatever request you make and prompt every time when you call them for house keeping.Further, since the place is in fishermen's colony one could sense the lifestyle of a fishermen , taste their fresh catch and interact with them early morning. Akuna Matata has limited menu when it comes to food and they are just about average. However, there is a Veg restaurant called "Hotel Radha" at few hundred meters from the property that can be looked upon for morning breakfast. In addition, there are few eateries close to this place that offer both Veg and Non-veg cuisines. Coming to the attraction, Kapu beach and Udupi are close to this place and it takes few minutes drive to reach them. Kapu and St.Mary's Island are must visit places if you are staying in this resort. Bottom line, Akuna Matata is one good beach resort with access to private beach where it is safe for kids and family to play in waters. Although,I would not recommend to have food here as you can find better restaurants in and around Udupi. The property is well known for its proximity to waters and location that is mind blowing.

Exquisite location and property, free from the maddening crowd of the city. The property even though not posh, makes up for it with the breath taking white sand beach and the shore just wanting you to get awestruck. The food is decent and the cottages provided have basic amenities. The location too is easily accessible.

Stayed here for 1 night to get away from the city. Gorgeous beach right next to property. Property is average with basic amenities. Rooms were spacious with a porch in front which was nice to laze around the evenings. No AC and TV available, which didn't bother us much for our stay. Food options are limited as well, though the manager on site will try to help with your needs. The approach road is narrow and not marked at all. So better to reach during day so you can ask for directions at the road side shops. Be careful if u are driving in a large SUV etc. The beach is really the star attraction of this place and doesn't disappoint. Service, facility cleanliness and food options can be improved. There is a security guard and some attendants available with the manager round the clock during out stay which was reassuring.

It is a dream location. The remote property stares into a clean white sand beach with the waves breaking just a few meters away. The white sand stretches on both sides for as far as the eye can see. The view of the sea is broken by a few rocks nearby, a couple of islands far away in the horizon and an occasional small fishing boat. A few fishermen operate in the area who bring in meagre catches in the morning. Very laid back and very calming place indeed. The property itself is well planned and well thought out - we rented one of the two villas. This is ideal for two families or a large group. These villas are in a separate plot a short distance away from the main property. The villa we rented has two large rooms with attached bathrooms (again large and modern), large living room, large dining area, large kitchen, high ceiling and lots of glass allowing for lots of light and some nice views. A nice wide porch surrounded by the garden (badam trees, coconut palms, hedges, beach shower) and strategically facing the sea provides for a nice area to sit outside. Unfortunately, the property is poorly managed (remotely managed as we discovered much later). We found the entire property in the care of just one attendant and one uniformed security person (senior citizen). The access to the villa is unmarked with nature attempting to reclaim the short narrow path towards the property. The grounds and the garden were unkempt - overgrown grass and a layer of long fallen dead leaves strewn all over. While the rooms were large and airy, there were cobwebs visible in many places but fortunately out of reach. Only after we reached Akuna Matata did we realize that the services are so minimal that we will need to cater to our needs ourselves. My friend and I drove back to highway NH-66 (NH-17 has been renamed recently) to find provisions. The only refrigerator in Akuna Matata was defunct and this meant stocking up on cool drinks and beer was a wasteful exercise. The poor attendant unsuccessfully spent over an hour to try and get ice for us and in the end just returned the money we had given as advance. The large kitchen wasn't completely functional either (i.e. not set up to cook or heat food) - esp. in the absence of an in-premise restaurant or even a nearby restaurant. The abundance of candles and mosquito repellent coils was a thoughtful gesture and a clue to what to expect. Just past sunset the villa was plunged into darkness. The candles and the mobile phone lights were useful. It was only when the lone attendant graced our villa (after more than an hour in darkness), did we discover that the we had tripped the fuse by turning on the hot water geysers in both the bathrooms :-). The cane furniture is past it's useful life and within minutes of our checking in one cane chair buckled under the weight of my friend who is recovering from a minor knee surgery - fortunately he escaped without any damage to his knee but could not save his pair of reading glasses. I suspect he must be harbouring serious doubts about my wisdom in booking this place! I would still not write this place off completely. The location is beautiful, basic infrastructure is good and with the attention of experienced hospitality management it can become true to its name - Akuna Matata (no worries) for its guests. Right now, there is lot to worry about especially as this place charges by the person and is not worth the money being charged.
