Our family get-together at the Stanmore Tea Bungalow last weekend (October 13 to 15) was by far one of the most enjoyable holidays in recent times. We had driven down from Kochi, starting at 6am, and got there in time for an early lunch, after a breakfast break near Pollachi. Tucked away, far from the madding crowd of the standard hill station, and perched atop a hill, the Stanmore Tea Bungalow overlooks rolling slopes of miles of tea gardens, in a hundred shades of green. It was like we had stepped into another time and age, where the estate babus would live like royalty with attentive staff to attend to ones needs, indulge in glorious food cooked just the way one likes it, spacious colonial style bedrooms, each complete with a fireplace and tall bay windows, toilets that are bedroom-sized, and a veranda that beckons you to lounge in its lovely armchairs and lose all track of time. The low slung gracious bungalow is beautifully kept, as is the garden that is fringed with tall ancient trees that are home to the Malabar whistling thrush, barbets and the colourful little minivets that add a splash of bright orange amongst the green. As a group of nine, we had rented out the entire bungalow (which has three suites, a drawing room and a dining room), as well as a chalet (which is beautiful too - built on stilts, with wooden walls, and full length veranda that overlooks a vista of tea gardens). The evenings found us chatting at the veranda over tea, and we would gather in the Drawing Room before dinner for some fun and games. The larger dining hall was used for the buffet breakfast, and lunch, while dinner would be served at the bungalows cheerfully lit personal dining room, where the table would be set for fine dining, replete with napkins folded to delightful forms. The food was outstanding special kudos to the men behind the scenes, the father-son pair of Chef Rangaiah & Chef Shivaraj, who would concoct the most amazing tasting dishes. The roast chicken with garlic bread, pumpkin soup, vegetable bake, and braised vegetables were my favourites, as were the spectacular desserts- coffee mousse, bread pudding and litchi mousse. Raju, the bungalow-in-charge, was very hospitable, as were all the staff, who and made us feel totally at home. We enjoyed the outings planned for us, for which we were accompanied by Ezhil, who was unfailingly courteous and attentive. The visit to the largely mechanized tea factory was interesting, and we got to see the process where freshly plucked green tea leaves were processed through several stages to transform into the various grades of tea as we know it. The same evening we managed a wonderful trek through the tea estates to a gurgling stream below - which was quite invigorating on the way down (for us and the resident leeches!), but truly an uphill trek on the way back. The next morning, we rose with the barbets, to drive through the swirling mist and tea gardens, along winding roads to the nearby Puthuthottam Estate for a walk with a naturalist. The trip was great fun, and we got to see a whole troop of lion-tailed macaques, a shy Malabar giant squirrel, orange-chested minivets and barbets, and a wild bison family a mother and calf, and a humongous male, as big as a truck! It was for me, a perfect holiday - a weekend where time stood still, where we got to catch up with family - over long walks, and chatting over tea, a time to connect with nature in a most unhurried manner, indulge in culinary delights which were all being dished out right at home, and the best part - having my whole family enjoying this, all under one roof!

We stayed in wooden chalet for 3 nights @ Stanford bungalow. We have been given the last wooden chalet. The room is maintained well. The view from balcony was mesmerizing, was able to see only tea estates surrounded. You get up with the birds chirping all around, hearing that for a guy from city is really surreal. They arranged for a morning walk, we got to see lion tailed macquee, giant squirrels, bison, hornbill & multiple birds. We have also visited pebble river, balaji temple, vellamalai tunnel and solaiyar dam. The food at bungalow need a special mention, they have buffet for lunch and dinner. They also serve ala carte to your rooms. Very delicious food, desserts were icing on the cake. I really liked the litchi mousse. They even went on to prepare the receipes we suggested. Hospitality need a special mention too. Everyone in the bungalow is so affectionate and caring. Raju took veey good care of us. Special mention - Anand, Azhar, Annavel, Sekar and two chefs. I also appreciate the chief chef and operations manager who visited us daily and ensured things are fine. Overall it was a memorable trip, suggest this property to everyone and would love to go back again.

1) Briar Tea Bungalows is an excellent place to stay especially if you are going with family or just a group of friends. 2) The bedrooms are really spacious with ample cross-ventilation and well-lit. The property also has a 3-4 tents - stay in these tents is really a great experience. 3) The whole property is landscaped really well that you feel you are in the middle of a forest 4) They have an excellent team that takes care of all the activities including food for guests. Jerome Antony (Head chef) was extremely friendly and helping by customizing the menu to suit our needs. He has done a marvellous job in preparing customized buffet (both lunch and dinner). Food was served on time and extremely tasty. They also served some of the local dishes that are famous in these parts. Jerome also helped setup a barbecue night for us along with camp fire. Thanks to the entire team & care takers . Special thanks to Jerome & Abishek (operation manager) .

Located at a very scenic location and surrounded by tea gardens, Sirukundra bungalow is about 5 km away from Valparai town, which makes it a nice and calm place stay especially for those who love to stay close to nature. We stayed in a tent and I have to say that was a one of a kind experience. The sound of the raindrops and various other wild animals turned the night into more of a thriller. One can get a nice view of surrounding tea estates just outside the resort. Dinner served was simple but tasty. We opted for a complimentary breakfast, which was a buffet and had a number of options. One more thing came as a surprise, they provided an early morning nature walk as a complimentary with the stay. The walk across their own tea estate on a misty morning was nothing short of an exhilarating experience. We were able to spot some Mongoose, Giant Squirrel and some birds like Orange Minivet and Hill Myna. Coming to the service, they are very good at it and the staffs are really helpful. Overall we loved our stay at the tent and we will never forget the experience. I would definitely recommend Sirukundra estate for anyone visiting Valparai.
