This guest house is as close as you can get to the Burning Ghat where Hindus burn their dead on funeral pyres in celebration of the departed, on the banks of a swollen (today) river Ganges. The mighty Ganges floods this time of year which prohibits one from taking a boat (the current is very powerful) to look back at the amazing sight of the temples among the banks. The Sankatha is not for everyone, if you like more expensive hotels then go stay there. Cars/rickshaws cannot get to Sankatha, so the last 10 minutes is a walk. They will send porters to help carry everything. Manu is the laid back manager, you will find him in the tiny lobby perched on his chair, classic yoga legs and a constant smile, but up on the rooftop restaurant Ravi Gupta rules. He is affable and knowledgable, he will cook great food and help design your day. He has a network of friends that he utilises to do whatever your bidding is. Just know that the area is inhabited by sacred cows and feral dogs... oh and monkeys. The narrow alleyways are a little tricky because of the cows (poop) and the motorbikes that are either parked or coming at you horns blaring. But if that worries you then you better forget Varanasi and go to Goa or somewhere. You have to be in the spirit of the area's history, the oldest city in India. The rooms at Sankatha are basic, but are a backpackers delight, 'cos the price is right per night. Much needed A/C works well. Hot or cold water showers are just great depending on your temperature. The rooftop over looks the neighbourhood, it is a sight to behold especially when Ravi starts to explain the history. I will miss my meals on the rooftop. Thank you Ravi. Malvin

Sankatha guesthouse will be my unique memory of India. Centrally located. Close to all important places in Varanasi. Room was basic but cosy and clean. Bath too. The whole building is an architectural gem. The street is colorful. Owners are nice and ready to help. Ravi (chef) and Vinod are so kind and funny. Their food is number 1. The whole atmosphere is welcoming. Hopefully, I'll be back. Highly recommended.

I spent 2 weeks at Sankatha guest house and had a wonderful time. Everyone was very carrying and helpful. Ravi is a wonderful cook, in fact he is an artist ! I've had the best indian food ever !! You can try anything, he will make it delicious ! Try the thali, the curry, the palak paneer, the cheese and garlic naan ... i miss them so much already !! Vinod was very helpful too, he prepared some delicious tea and rices and made your room very confortable. And all this with smiles, and enjoying the very nice view on the roof top and the Ganga

The food there was really nice, nicer than other surrounding guesthouses, and they have a nice rooftop where it's is nice to sit and enjoy a meal. And the owner is very very very friendly which made us come back quite a few times during our stay. Very good prices too.
