I think that staying in uma house was the best experience in my trip to India. I really learned a lot about Indian culture, food, Hinduism. I had the fortune to meet a little kid there who was my guide in Varanasi. Staying here show me that the best way to learn and enjoy a place is having a real contact with locals, and that luxuries and comfort passes to a second place. The room is small and very hot at night but is all you need Uma's husband was really kind and helped us a lot ! I really didn't have a lot of contact with uma but she was kind. If you want to have a really Indian experience and life the real Varanasi and you don't bother about to have AC, etc..... Stay at uma's guesthouse

Thanks lonely planet! 3 members of this family managing 3 rooms will do everything to make your stay impossible. As soon as you have registered they will stop to be polite with you. They will try to come inside your room for one reason or another, just to check what you are doing. Each door, made of wood, has a space of 2 cm in the middle, between the 2 sides of the door. This way everyone is able to put his eye checking what you are doing. One girl from Argentina tried to have a little intimacy with his boyfriend but one of the brothers decided to sleep, on the floor, just in front of her door. When they dont have customer the same brother sleeps in one of the 3 rooms available. When the guesthouse is full he sleeps on the floor. Of course they dont change or clean the bed sheets when someone checks out. And when you confirm your departure date they will cut electricity power and hot water. This is a government decision, to cut the power today. Knowing that you will never come back in this horrible place. The problem is that the government didnt cut the power in all the empty rooms around yours. I really dont understand how lonely planet process to recommend a guesthouse. They were out of their mind checking this place!!!

Uma guesthouse is a nice place to stay in Varanasi, well situated, very clean and in a beautiful indian house. Bolu is adorable and always helpful! We forgot our keys in our room and he made all his time free to find a solution, and he did solve the problem.

We stayed at Uma Guesthouse for three days in September 2014. It is located close to the Ghats including Main Ghat and Burning Ghat. The building is typical for Varanasi's old town and has a very nice rooftop, from where you can enjoy the view on Ghanga, see children flying kites, watch monkeys or have an interesting conversation with Kaki Babu:) Bolu and his family recommended what is worth to see in Varanasi, and answered all of our questions. The room was clean and comfortable, with shower and toilet. We had one next to Kaki's room with a small balcony. Price per night was cheap, even if it was different from what Lonely Planet said. All in all, it was a very nice stay in this guesthouse with great atmosphere and we will come back when we are in Varanasi again :) Bolu, if you read this: we met your friend at Rainbow Guesthouse in the Himalayan village and gave him your letter, he was surprised and glad to read it ;) See you next time! Uma Guest house is tucked away in the winding streets of Varanasi - very close to the Ghats. This place is full of character, basic but clean rooms and very friendly host who can help organise trips etc. We would recommend!
