Reason For Rating : Rooms are very bad

What needs to improve : room is basic

What's Good: Staff members
What needs to improve : Already mentioned
Reason For Rating : The staff members of this resort found to be dedicated and that's all. Not even one bottle of complementery mineral water they offered. Other than one soap at Wash room, they did not provide any toiletries. The latches of the wash room door was hard to use. Two of the dishes were found broken, while served tea to us. It is at least ten minutes walk to reach the beach from this resort. However, I would once again like to appreciate the dedication of the staff members and they are the real assets of the resort. If I ever visit this resort, that would surely for those staff members only.
Affordable chill-out bliss

We had a fabulous stay in Akhil Beach. On arrival we were a little disappointed with the position of our room (booked 6 months in advance through booking.com) and the reception team could not have been more helpful in moving us to a different room, then checking we were satisfied with the swap. House-keeping is on request - we wanted our beds made and floors swept daily but were happy to keep sheets and towels longer, yet they insisted on changing these daily. We had wrongly believed certain amenities would be in the room, and asked why they werent but on checking with the manager and on the booking description, realised this was our error. However, these items appeared in the room on the 2nd day, so we can only guess theyd been borrowed from somewhere to help us out. The gardens and pool area are beautiful and well-kept, and our room and balcony were bright, clean, modern and spacious - talking to several other guests (who have returned every year for over 10 years, that says something) many rooms have just been refurbished. Seeing other reviews, yes the air con is a little noisy but our room also had a very large and practically silent ceiling fan. The hotel is in a fabulous corner of Varkala Cliff, just a 5 minute stroll to the cliff top restaurants, ashrams, shops and beautiful sandy beach. We spent lazy afternoons by the pool before wandering down for a sunset ocean swim. Considering the price and official rating Akhil Beach is fantastic value and an absolute gem if you want peaceful laid-back chillout with friendly and helpful staff.
Gouged and Disappointed
by cliffskoog on
We have stayed in lots of different places in India, home stays, resorts, and hotels. We have always been impressed by the cleanliness, comfort, and pleasantness of hospitality. This is our least favourite place to stay ever in India. Despite booking in early October for 'deluxe' accommodation with pool side view we were afforded a really tiny budget style room (whatever they might like to call it) where the fan close over the bed clattered and whirred intermittently and the A/C, also too close to the bed, did not work properly and kept turning itself on. Between the irregular clattering of the fan and all too audible sound of other rooms A/Cs, we spent a sleepless night imagining being in a train compartment. After that terrible night I saw the owner who offered to upgrade us for a per-night discount of 1,000 INR if we paid 1,000 INR extra. We relocated to the cottage, and even though we had meantime found a nicer resort, the Lillypad, we decided to stay as we were tired after travelling. Bad mistake. The service is fine, charming lads as usual, delightful night manager, but the talk on the street is that the owner has five hotels and big plans underway. It shows. We saw only Europeans staying there, so I guess the word has got out among Indians. Management pictures of rooms and grounds are stretched to make it all look more spacious. Still, the place has beautiful grounds but rooms are very poorly maintained. Unclean windows, stuff on the curtains, and a green cloudy pool. When brought to the attention of the manager, he showed us the tiny but clean pool at his other hotel. The big pool needed a new pump but nothing happened for days - all of our stay. And despite this, and disturbingly, seemingly anyone can come and use that pool through the back entrance, and they do. No one was notified of health risks over several days as the water became cloudier and cloudier - and no showering facilities were nearby to wash off oil, cream, and dirt. I noticed rusty stains on the sheets after about two days and a quick google suggested evidence of bed bugs. I sustained weird bites which an Ayurvedic doctor said was from a creature but we don't really know what. I never saw bugs but the sheets testify they have been there. Neither of the rooms we stayed in had functioning wifi, despite claims otherwise. We had to use public areas for that. When we came to check out management's true colours really showed. There were few tourists this year's season, so anxiety is in the air. The owner insisted he had offered only 500 rupees reduction. Never wrote that down foolishly, but we would not have accepted that at such an inflated price over our initial budget. Gouging rather than offering hospitality, focusing on expansion rather than being on top of what was there had us so relieved to leave. We would never come back here.
Raja Park revisited

Since my last visit in 2019 the hotel has refurbished the rooms with a lot of wood, creating a cosy atmosphere. Also the doors were modernized and now can be only opened by an entry card. There is now much more lighting in the room. It took me the better part of a week to find out which switch was doing what. Room cleaning was done on request and was efficient. A big advantage is the pool at the Akhil Beach across the road that you could use. Sometimes there were so many people from outside paying the fee for the pool that hotel guests found it difficult to get a sunbed. The restaurant has not changed in any way, serving quite acceptable food at lower than average prices. That the service could be faster has been mentioned during my two former visits as well.
Akhil beach resort BUT DO NOT USE GUESTHOUSER under any circumstances
by bill b on
We booked our flights, hotel and transfer through booking.com who in turn booked the hotel through Guesthouser. We were initially concerned because we were not sure if the hotel they showed was the one we had previously stayed in. However as they showed us a photo of the hotel, which we recognised, our concerns appeared to be unjustified. The flights to India and the transfer from the airport to hotel went smoothly and we arrived at the hotel at about 03.30 local time. Things then started going wrong as the hotel advised that although Guesthouser has requested the room they had not confirmed the booking and had not paid. We then spent nearly two hours trying to contact booking.com and Guesthouser on all the telephone numbers and email addresses provided with no luck and on the end we were forced to pay a further 1300 to ensure that we had somewhere to stay during our holiday. Three days later we received an email from Guesthouser saying that they were unoperational on the day of our arrival and could not help us but by way of apology they would refund us 400. Obviously no mention of the 90 spent on phone calls or the stress of arrival with no where to stay. Needless to say, some 14 days later we are still awaiting the refund My advice following this saga - DO NOT USE GUESTHOUSER under any circumstances
Swimming pool area is awesome

Resort is not sea facing but its pool area compensates for it. One can enjoy the swim while listening birds chirping in the background . Special mention to Mr, Ranjit in the reception , his dedication to serve customers is commendable. Overall service is good.
