We spent 6 wonderful nights in this lovely Homestay and nothing was too much trouble for Rosemary who bent over backwards to ensure a happy stay! The room we had was super clean and airy with an en suite bathroom and big terrace. The shared kitchen was well equipped and really useful.I recommend this Homestay as excellent value for money. Many thanks Rosemary for such a pleasant stay! Sarah and Christine

We stayed at Gumnut for 7 nights in April 2018. The room was very clean & spacious, without air con but with a fan which did keep us relatively cool (although you are not allowed to put it on full speed). It felt like we were treading on eggshells with the owner Roz. She seemed more interested in keeping the electricity bills down than hosting her guests. Every time you left your room there was a note to turn off all electricity - understandable if you are leaving the building. On a few occasions we'd left devices on charge in the room whilst at breakfast, to come back and find that the power had been turned off and therefore not charged. There is a shared kitchen upstairs. You can only cook vegetarian food here. One day we realised Roz had turned off the fridge because she didn't think the food we had put in there needed refrigerating. On our final day the hot plate apparently smashed somehow so all of the food we bought, eggs etc were uncookable with no back up plan. There is filtered water but this even seemed a chore as once the 3 litre-ish container ran out you had to go and ask for more. As a couple, we do drink a lot of water but we found ourselves feeling guilty when asking for more. There was a larger filter upstairs but this wasn't in use, not sure why. For the majority of the week also we were the only people staying there. Overall a shame really because the house itself was really nice and in a good location!

We stayed at Gumnut by fortuitous accident! Rose, who runs it with her husband greeted us. when we turned up with no booking and gave my son and his friend a top floor ensuite room with a huge balcony and two double beds.I had a smaller though similar room for one night and then Rose moved me to an ensuite double room with a shared balcony and air con which was a godsend for me. Rose could not have been kinder, helping us with phone calls and giving us local advice, though perhaps the outstanding thing was her compassion for a difficult situation we were dealing with while we were staying. Neither did we feel crowded or having to explain more than was necessary. We also had use of a shared kitchen and a fridge (another godsend!) and there was filtered water on tap. Small details which made it a real comfort. The beach was a short walk through a local cafe/bar and down some steep steps or down the road.Really easy and convenient. Gumnut was spotlessly clean and I found myself coming in remarking "Oh I'm home now". That says it all. I'd recommend this Homestay to anyone wanting the quiet of the South Cliff at Varkala and with great cafes very close by. North Cliff is not far away.

Rose made me feel really welcome & she took care of me when I had food poisoning. The rooms are basic but comfortable and clean and quiet. I would definitely stay here again, great for solo travellers and couples. Value for money. Close to the beach and 30 seconds walk to the Soul & surf cafe.

Slightly unusual review as I didnt actually stay a night at Gumnut but I spent enough time with the owner, Rose, who was extremely understanding when I had issues at another property in Varkala and saw the rooms and spoke with other guests to know that this is a little gem of a homestay and will suit anyone who is looking for a relaxing and comfortable stay in Varkala. Its also located right next to Soul and Surf so is a great option if youre looking to do surf lessons, yoga, etc.
