We absolutely loved our stay at this excellent, private, quiet, comfortable resort. Our cottage was well-equipped, roomy, and beautiful. We stayed in one of the original cottages, with a view out the front to the ocean and also out the back to the lotus garden - I definitely recommend asking for one of these cottages. The bed was the most comfortable one we had in 7 weeks travel around India, and the staff was exceptional. Three brothers and their uncle run the show, with each of them handling various jobs/responsibilities - but the person who really was the most helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and unstoppable, was Anas ... not family but without whom I can't imagine the place running even half as well. He and Thayyoob, the Uncle, are what makes this place tick ... Anas with his humour and smarts and geniuine friendliness, Thayyoob with his attention to detail and determination to make everything perfect as far as professionalism and cleanliness goes. The entire staff, however, are really attentive and friendly - with the exception of one waiter, who never seemed to be genuinely friendly to anyone. We loved the location, 20 minutes walk from the hectic and chaotic Varkala Cliff, with our almost completely private beach area. The water is perfect, the beach is cleaned up regularly so is not full of garbage like much of the surrounding area... the cliff has a terrific sunset view. Breakfast is plentiful and tasty... and the rest of the food here was quite good. We had a relaxing, fun, excellent time here and highly recommend it.

Stayed at Maadathill cottages for a few nights and really enjoyed my time there. The rooms are lovely, spacious and clean, and the ensuite bathrooms are nice with hot water showers. All the staff working here are great. Really friendly people and I got to know most of them over the time that I spent here. The restaurant area is also nice, with plants and trees for shade. The food in the restaurant is delicious and made from scratch each time. At busy times they may ask you to chose a time for dinner so they can stagger prepation time in the kitchen. Indian breakfast can also be ordered the day before. Always a nice suprise to see what I was going to get to eat as I didnt give them a specific order for breakfast. The steamed coconut and banana cakes I got one morning were fantastic and the prawn masala was my favorite dinner choice. The accomodation is set a little way back from the beach where fisherman keep their boats and cast their nets each morning and you can hear the waves breaking from your bedroom. Bliss!

We didn't get to stay as it was booked out but managed to stay at a neighbouring property. We did eat at the restaurant here on a number of occasions and enjoyed it very much. We ate some appetizers, rice dishes, breads, curries, prawns, calamari, and desserts. All very tasty and freshly prepared. Reasonable prices for this tourist area. A good 20/25 minute walk from the main cliff restaurants, but worth it. Great, especially when staying nearby

Booked a cottage for mum and friend for 8 nights. Having seen the properties already, knew what to expect but the cottages, location and service and staff exceeded even high expectations. Perfectly located away from the buzz of the cliff, but within walking distance or easy tuk tuk. Serenity and peace, right by the beautiful ocean, cool breeze, good food at the restaurant and also nearby resort where one can also eat. By far, for the cost, the best stay in Varkala for the budget. The cottages are luxury, especially by Indian standards where it can be difficult to find good quality accomadation. And the staff....well they were just excellent, friendly, helpful and it was like being with family! Guests were so happy with their stay in Varkala and the Maadathil cottages really made this so! Thank you for contributing to our wonderful stay in Kerala....we will be back and will definintely recommend you!

We had selected Maadathil for the location away from the overcrowded and tourist-swamped cliff, for its proximity to the beach and the quality of the huts shown online. Overall, our expectations were met: The location is ideal when you are looking for something quiet and when you are ready to make an effort to go (walk or drive) anywhere (i.e. whatever you want to do). Maadathil is a good 20 minutes walk to either the Northern cliff or the main road or a 150 INR ride (tuc-tuc is expensive in Varkala). There are small beaches close to the cottages including one beautiful fishing beach that is used every morning to bring in a large net or boats including the fish processing and the accompanying sounds. The huts are great concerning size and quality of the furniture, aircon, large bathrooms etc. However, the website gives the impression as if the luxury huts were standing more alone than they actually do both our neighbours were very close (you overhear normal conversations). Some huts are even semi-detached, which frankly I would not want. Breakfast is okay as it offers a good selection. However, they limit your choice to one item per category, one coffee or tea and one juice. For me, such restrictions are unusual when you book a certain category of accommodation (which they aspire to be) or in a country where local food is very inexpensive (which is the case for India). We had small issues with the bathroom ventilation that brought in bad smells from the outside, the lighting system, the mosquito nets with a few holes or the handling and accounting of (pre)payment (which we made in Euro and then had to pick up both charges and bad currency rate which clearly should be taken by any accommodation). The best asset of the cottages is the staff which is extremely friendly, helpful and motivated. They checked availability of bikes for us, gave tips where to walk (away from the crowds) and brought the first morning tea to our terrace.
