The cottages are really nicely presented and twenty metres or so from the ocean, so you hear the waves breaking all night long which is lovely. The a/c worked well (was a bit noisy tbh). The beaches are sandy (yellow and black sand) and when the tides low to you walk almost all the way to Verkala cliffs, which is a fifteen-minute stroll. The men running the cottages are very warm and welcoming, and we felt very safe and sound staying there. The cottages are definitely for those that want a quiet and peaceful break. The breakfast is selected from a menu each day, plenty to choose from and freshly cooked. Note that Kerala is a dry state, a blind eye is taken to tourists drinking but it means that many places dont sell alcohol and those that do wont advertise it. The cottages do not sell alcohol, so you will need to find you own source, there are lots of people who will tell you how though. Tips - 1. Take a torch for walking around at night, 2. Kerala is far more expensive than it was just a few years ago which is sadly putting people off.

After spending 11 days traveling south from Mumbai, we found ourselves in Odayam at Maadathil cottages. What a fantastic resort to chill out and spend the New Year celebrations after 1300 miles under our belt. Great management and staff....what a sunset and location. See you for the 2021 celebrations Muhajir

The room was as pictured, the bed was comfortable, the a/c worked well (and quietly), the waves were near (if not directly seen), the grounds are pretty, the ocean is lovely with a sandy, quiet beach (we saw dolphins only 50m from shore), but most of all, the staff does everything they can to help you out with everything from info to rickshaws. There's a yoga school next door, so yoga is available every morning at 8am (and some afternoons, too), plus our hotel gave us a couple yoga mats to borrow. I highly, highly recommend staying here if you like it quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was great, but food was mediocre. Side note: recommend IndaHouse Hotel's restaurant in Varkala for organic buddha bowls and yummy fresh juices.

Came here to rest after travelling around India for 2 months. Cottages were good size with lovely verandah to sit and relax. Beach is quiet just across the way. Watched the fishermen every morning. We ate here every night as the food was delicious. The family and staff couldnt do enough for us and would highly recommend staying here.

I have just stayed in one of these cottages for 2 weeks. It is extremely relaxed yet very efficient and friendly service from arranging taxis and tuktuks to laundry or food on your private terrace. I slept with the sound of the waves from the nearby, extremely clean beach. Breakfast is served until late or you can go to yoga at the hotel 2 mins walk away if thats your thing. Otherwise, meal times are chilled affairs as is the time in between on the sun beds or hanging around in hammocks or sitting on Odayam Beach which is just in front of the cottages. There is a juice bar 2 minutes in the other direction called Lotus and theres no menu but she cooks lovely local fish and curry. You just have to ask. You can eat there in the evening. A totally relaxing holiday.
