What's Good: Location

A great getaway. A short drive from Vythiri. Ensconced in a sprawling property featuring tea gardens and plantations of coffee and spices like pepper and cardamom. The rooms are cosy, and well kept. The dining area an absolute pleasure, what with a little badminton court, carrom, and a tiny library with books for all sorts of age groups! And the swings and the hanging platform to sit on. A genset provides electricity after 6:30pm. Otherwise, they are not connected to the power grid. So, the kitchen staff, Ambadi and Vilasini, make the food from fresh, local produce. Even the spices used are ground using the traditional stone grinders. The taste is absolutely fabulous! Shibu and Praveen take turns in staying over for the night. They are always there to take care of the guests personally. And that includes your pet! Praveen also happily plays a bit of percussion on the beat box. They go out of their way to help with anything you need. From being your concierge in renting a car, to explaining the cuisine. Don't miss the walk through the property they take you for! Even their MD, Zafar spoke to us personally provided as much help telephonically as possible. Not only were we very happy and relaxed, our dog wanted us to stay back, refusing to come back! The last 400m of the road is indeed untarred and can be a little rough. But they say that upfront.

We had a perfect first wedding anniversary at Annapara Homestay. Praveen & Shibu were excellent hosts and Ambadi & Vilasani were excellent chefs. The homestay itself is a lovely, no-frills space - warm and inviting with plenty of nooks and crannies to curl up into. Plenty of sun and plenty of cool shade in equal measure scattered all over the place, I highly recommend getting into the cool, untreated pool and stepping out into the warm sun to dry off. The views are gorgeous, allowing your brain to switch off completely. The food, the food, sigh the food. Incredibly tasty vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, authentic Kerala cuisine, in such quantities that we couldn't help but eat thrice our normal portions, *every single meal*. We were privileged to have the homestay all to ourselves but are really looking forward to going back with our family and friends. We *definitely* recommend it. We were happy to have been left alone to enjoy each other's company while our every need was met unobtrusively.

After good reviews, I had bookrf a day and was looking forward to it. The difficulty in getting to the place was a bad start. After that the lunch had very few variety of kerala food. Snacks and tea was not fine. I had to ask for black tea. As the night came by the generator was on and lasted till 11 p.m. The camp fire was a welcome change. With quite the basic features and amenities the price should also be minimal. Which was not the case.

Yes, there's no electricity for most part of the day, but it's not required cos they have an excellent natural lighting system and natural water heating system (that water is really hot). Yes, there's low or no mobile networks, but hey, isn't that the whole point of a vacation? The awesomeness at Annapara starts from the time you enter the gates, where Praveen and Shibu (the two caretakers) are waiting with their 1000W smiles. Both of them make you comfortable and are not overly clingy like most caretakers I've seen at resorts/home stays. Let's go step by step: Food: The food at the property is ALWAYS cooked fresh and is served with a lot of love by Praveen and Shibu. They thrive on nature and hence use less electricity which is why there's no fridge, leading to fresh food at all times. Advise: Be a little open to savouring and trying local cuisines and don't be stuck up on fancy foods. Chai and Coffee is available at all times. Just give a shoutout (not literally) to Shibu and Praveen and they'll do the needful Stay: We were traveling with our 4 month old puppy who had a great time. The beds were cosy, the rooms were clean and smelled good. Pool: The property has a natural pool. Natural means the water is from a natural source, no chlorine or anything like that. Even if it's for a dip, you MUST go in. Around: 1. Figure out if Praveen (who's a great wildlife photographer as well) has some time at hand and ask him to take you to the waterfall close by (about 2-3 km trek/hike). You 2. Take a walk to the tea plantations on both sides of the estate 3. Always tell Shibu/Praveen if you're heading out and take any words of caution they have to give very seriously. In the end, I'd say make this trip for your soul or for your dog. We did it for both and came back with happy souls and a very happy dog. It's rare to find such hospitable people and properties these days (or maybe I need to travel more :D )

I spent three nights at Annapara last week and had an extremely rejuvenating experience. All the other reviews speak to the wonderful, unassuming charm of the place and how it has been built on an environmentally friendly model, and I agree that this is one of the biggest attractions of the place - kudos to the owners for executing their vision. Praveen and Shibu, the two "front of house" staff who handle everything from planning mealtime to taking you on walks and hikes, are really warm and friendly, as are the kitchen staff. It's a perfect getaway, and the landscape of Vythiri is calm and relaxing, with plenty of trails and walking paths in the vicinity. I highly recommend Annapara!
