The location is excellent and what makes it very unique is the wildlife right on your doorstep. Within a short time of arriving we went up the watchtower on the property and had very close encounters with a visiting wild elephant. The view from the cottage balcony are of beautiful jungle scenes backing off to high mountain peaks. The cottage we stayed in was very attractive and comfortable and the whole place is beautifully laid out. The staff - Manu, Kumar and Fabin and others were exceptional. We enjoyed the evening camp fire and the jungle awareness walk. We did the morning safari in Tholpetti and the afternoon JLR safari in Nargahole. We would recommend the JLR safari in particular. We saw a fleeting tiger, elephants, monitor lizards, monkeys, chital, sambar, mongoose and giant squirrel. The Nagarhole safari in particular was in beautiful jungle and for two and a half hours, so much longer - the guide/driver was very good too making effort to locate wildlife. A tiny thing - ditch the plastic straws! Many thanks Anju and Hubbie for sharing your wonderful property in such a way.

I have been fascinated by the simplicity and the serene beauty of Jungle Retreat Wayanad (JRW) ever since my first visit in Oct 2016 and since then have visited JRW four times; the latest visit being in Dec 2018. While being in JRW it feels like we are part of nature and never feel like returning from this beautiful place. During my recent stay enjoyed the nature walk, frequent alarm calls indicating cat movements, deer visits to the farm and most importantly the visit of a Tuskar "Half Tail" as called by the locals. He was a mesmerising elephant who was in the farm for more than an hour and played in the water hole for a while. Sharing a few pics of our lovely "Half Tail". JRW team also arranges JLR safaris at Nagarhole National Park which are premium safaris and are privately conducted by JLR. During this recent visit, upon our special request our hosts "Anil" and "Anju" made special arrangements for "Kabini Safari" which is again a premium safari conducted by JLR at a different part of Nagarhole National Park. The main attraction for this safari is a Black Panther a.k.a. "Blacky".. The food served at JRW was superb. JRW team at the time of confirming bookings specifically asks about food preferences and allergies. Never did I have to repeat this during the stay. The most important thing that I like about JRW is how perfectly it is blended with nature. It makes use of yellow lights which does not disturb wildlife. (absolutely no white lights..) There is no TV or Music System that can cause disturbance to wildlife. I would request all guests visiting this place to never play music on portable speakers. Please make use of headphones. Everyone at JRW is like one family and during all my visits I never even bothered to lock the cottage. Kept it open most of the times, even when I leave the resort and go out. Anil and Anju are a lovely and caring hosts..!! JRW is a heaven for wildlife lovers..!! The following lines are not related to Jungle Retreat Wayanad, however sharing it with other readers just to help them. (Do not mix them with my above review. It's just additional information.) First Point: If anyone plans to do a "Kabini Safari", please note one sided route for "Kabini Safari" will be shorter (70 km approximately), while the other route will be approximately 150+ km. This is because there is a forest road connecting to Mysore that opens at 6am and closes at 6pm. So depending upon whether you opt for morning safari(6am safari starts) or afternoon safari (6:30pm safari ends), one side travel will be a longer route. The only trouble is that google maps does not consider that the Mysore forest road is closed and suggests us the route first via the Mysore forest road and later on if you are close to Hunsur then via Nagarhole National Park. Just to give an idea, if you have opted for afternoon safari, I would suggest to travel via Kabini River Lodge - Hunsur - Gonikoppal - Kutta - Jungle Retreat Wayanad (3.5 hours approximately on the longer route) and like wise the opposite if you plan to opt for morning safari. Second Point: If you are travelling via four wheeler, then you can also opt for a drive through the Nagarhole National Park. At times as you drive through; there are good sightings on the main road of Nagarhole National Park. Please note the last vehicle allowed on each side is at 6pm. So if you plan to drive then please reach the Nagarhole National Park gate towards "Kutta" latest by 4pm as it takes an hour to reach the other side(Towards Hunsur) and likewise for return journey.

We spent 4 nights here. Was highly impressed with the staff and service levels - special shout out to Febin and Manu for their ever smiling presence and hospitality. Excellent food, wonderful activities list which is curated personally by the team here. Smooth bookings thanks to Anju and they also helped arrange pick up & drop from Calicut airport. Would have loved more sightings but that's for another time! Overall highly recommended to anyone who is looking for a verdant getaway from the city hustle, will surely be back if time and opportunity permit.

We have 3 kids (17, 14 & 10) and spent 3 nights here, which was the highlight of our holiday (though the rest of it was pretty good too). Manu was our guide and facilitator of just about anything really. We did both jeep safaris, Tholpetty was ok, but Nagarhole - is where we saw the leopard. It's such a rush, you don't know what or if you'll see anything when you leave, but the exhilaration when you do! Our cottage was opposite the waterhole, we saw monkeys, deer, guar & elephants right there in front of us. The trek with Manu made us realise the land there is special, but I won't say why, if you go you'll find out. We ate like kings, 3 meals a day, the quality was exceptional. The chef is a modest man, but he is very talented. We felt very safe and at home, we met other guests who we hope to stay in touch with. But seeing fresh tiger & elephant prints around the property is just amazing, I'm so so glad we got to share those memories with our children. We hope to return one day.

I have only good things to say. Manu a big thanks for making it a wonderful place. The cook a non-local dishing out the best local flavours. While passing Nagarhole National Park you read boards that read, Jungle has many things to offer, you need to be ready to take the surprises and that line holds true to Jungle Retreat. We stayed there for two days and it was magical. We just had to remember that we are in the path of the animals and not they. Hence we had to wait patiently for the beauty of the jungle to unravel in front of us. The silence gave us rich experience. A leopard just 50 feet away from me, several elephants stepping out, Indian Gaur just 10 feet away. See how the deers raise an alarm.. it was all fabulous. We did not get tiger sightings but thats ok. We don't see our dear once on a daily basis even though we share a room, this is a vast jungle, you just need to understand and respect their space. I will surely be returning just for the experience of listening to natures music. Ofcourse to have some delicious Kerala food :)
