West Kameng is one of the tranquil hill stations located in the north-eastern region of India. Owing to its breathtaking beauty, this place is also known as the ‘Land of Downlit Mountains'. Located in Arunachal Pradesh or ‘Land of the Rising Sun’, this place is a perfect holidaymaker for nature lovers who often plan a West Kameng tour. The name of the place is derived from Kameng, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. Home to tribes including Monpas, Mijis, Akas, Sherdukpen and Khawa, West Kameng is an ideal place to explore their unique lifestyle.
Wildlife lovers can visit the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary which is the most significant tourist attraction of the area. This is a natural habitat of the Bengal Tiger and the Great Hornbill. White-winged Wood Ducks, Elephants, Gaurs, Sambhars, Binturongs, Leopards, Peacock Pheasants and Kalij Pheasants are the other commonly seen fauna here. Other popular tourist attractions in West Kameng are Dirang Valley, Sela Pass, Tawang, Tippi Jamiri and Morshing. Bhalukpong is a scenic picnic spot located on the bank of the Kameng River. In addition, the Tipi Orchidarium, with more than 7500 orchids, is an admirable place to visit.
In addition to attractions within the hill station, there are plenty of tourist hotspots located around West Kameng. Some of the famous places are Dirang Fort, Upper Doogjar at Rupa, Sela & Sange, Nechiphu and ruins of Dimachung-Betali. Angling and rafting are the predominant tourist activities in West Kameng. Tourists must also visit Bomdila, a mesmerising frozen town, situated close to West Kameng. Perched at an altitude of 8000 ft above sea level, Bomdila offers breathtaking views of the mighty Himalayan ranges. The beautiful monasteries and apple orchards are the prime attractions of this place.
