History The Heart of India is also the finding grounds of isolated remains of Homo erectus found in Hathnora in the ancient valley of Narmada. This indicates that Madhya Pradesh might have been inhabited since the Middle Pleistocene era. In the Medieval period, this region was under the reign of Paramaras of Malwa and Chandelas of Bundelkhand. However, in the mid 16th century, Sher Shah Suri captured most parts of the state, followed by Hemu. The Marathas took the control of this region between 1720 and 1760, but soon after the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the region came under the control of the British. After independence, Madhya Pradesh was created in 1950 from the former British Central Provinces and Nagpur was declared the capital of the region.
