History In the local language, Mizoram translates to ‘land of the hill people’. Before the British Raj, the tribal chiefs enjoyed high position in the gerontocratic Mizo society. In the year 1895, the Mizo Hills was declared a part of the British India. The northern and southern parts of Mizo Hills came under the geographical boundary of Assam province in 1898 with Aizawl as the headquarter. In 1947, when India gained independence from the British Raj, the number of tribal chiefs had swelled up to over 200.
