Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Western India, Ahmedabad lies 53 metres above sea level. The city covers an area of 464 square kilometres. Earlier, the river frequently dried up during summer, leaving the city sandy and dry. With the implementation of Sabarmati River Front Project and Embankment, the waters have been diverted to keep the river flowing. The city consists of three rivers- Kankaria, Vastrapur and Chandola. Ahmedabad falls under seismic zone 3, making it vulnerable to earthquakes.
