About Fort St. George

Established in 1644, the fort was historically called White Town and is the first British fortress in India. Built along the Bay of Bengal shoreline, Fort St. George presently houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as well as other official buildings, and remains a prime attraction of Chennai. The fort has two key sections - the St Mary’s Church and the Fort Museum. The splendid St Mary’s Church is in fact the oldest Anglican church in India. Built in 1680 it still retains its grandeur and is often referred to as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East'. The tombstones in its graveyard are the oldest ones in India and have a majestic aura around them. At the end of the building is Clive’s corner that houses a memorial museum to Robert Clive. Robert Clive had solemnized his marriage vows at this very church. The Fort St. George Museum has a striking structure and was an important building through the British reign. Today it houses the relics of the British personnel who inhabited this fort, and also showcases artifacts as coins, paintings, medals, letters, etc, from the colonial period; as well as some brilliant sculptures.

Historical Context: The British traders who had entered India in 1600 felt the need to protect their commercial interests in the spice route. They were successful in acquiring some coastal land originally called Channapatnam, and started the construction of the fort and a harbour. The fort was finished on 23 April 1644, which happened to be St. George's Day - a patron saint of England, hence the fort was christened Fort St. George,. Soon the fort and surrounding area became the hub of merchant activity, and came to be known as George Town. As the settlement continued to grow it led to the formation of the city of Madras. The fort remained a British stronghold through the years and withstood a number of assaults. It briefly passed into French hands between 1746 to 1749, but was soon restored to Great Britain. The fort remains the administrative headquarters of Tamil Nadu government and is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India today.
