A Fascinating Glimpse into History
Presently a leading industrial centre of India, Faridabad was founded in 1607 AD with just a fort, mosque and tank built by Sheikh Farid – a Sufi saint who was the treasurer of Mughal emperor Jahangir. Although the monuments are in ruins now, Faridabad still has the reminiscence of its founder in the form of his tomb, located at the centre of the town. Constructed by the Mughals in 1265 AD after the death of Baba Farid, the tomb is made of white marble and has two gateways – Nuri Darwaza and Bahishti Darwaza. Within its walls are the graves of the saint and his elder son, covered in green chaadar. You can pay your regards to the saint and later on, eat langar which is served here every day. It must be noted that ladies are prohibited inside the tomb.
Another marvel from the fascinating history of Faridabad
is Raja Nahar Singh Palace, which dates back to the 18th century. The construction of the palace is said to have started under the rule of his ancestor Rao Balram who rose to power in 1739, and continued in parts till 1850. Raja Nahar Singh lost his life in the War of Independence of 1857, but his palace fought the pangs of time and has been turned into a beautifully maintained heritage property with air-conditioned rooms and other contemporary facilities. The architectural works around the property, located in the main market of Ballabgarh, further make it a perfect place for you to visit, admire and capture in your cameras.
Pay Reverence to the Divine
If you are a believer of the Supreme Being, you must pay a visit to the Shiva Temple, situated at Sainik Colony in Sector 49. The shrine is famed for its 22 feet high Shivlinga and is frequented by a large number of devotees. Another such popular shrine in Faridabad is ISKCON Temple, or Sri Sri Radha Govind Temple, located at Ashoka Enclave in Sector 37. The temple is alive with the music from prayers and aartis sung in the praise of Lord Krishna.
Situated in Sector 16A, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is perhaps the most revered attraction in Faridabad
. Spread over an area of 3 acres, the temple houses a 5.25 feet tall statue of the deity, made of white marble. Devotees gather in its 560 sq. metre hall for prayers, besides other ceremonies like holy bath of Baba, Satyanarayan katha and Sai Naam Jaap. The temple is most crowded on Thursdays, but it is also the perfect day to enjoy its bhandara.
A Rendezvous with Nature
Badhkal Lake was the most popular attraction in Faridabad
once; however, it has dried up over the last few years. Though you cannot enjoy boating there anymore, it is still a great place to unwind in the serenity of the Aravalli Hills surrounding the place. If you are in town during the spring, do not miss the Flower Show hosted at the Badhkal Lake Resort located adjacent to the spot.
For boating though, you can head to Surajkund Lake – an artificial reservoir built in the 10th century by the Tomar king, Surajpal. This site is popular for hosting the annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela. It is one of the most significant events in the books of domestic tourism as it exhibits the varied cultures of India and attracts millions of people from across the world.
Just southwest of Surajkund is the Anangpur Dam, which is also a great spot to enjoy the pleasant weather of Faridabad
. Aravalli Golf Course and Town Park in Sector 12 are other great places in the city, if you wish to relax and spend some quality time amidst nature with your family and kids.
