Attractions In jalandhar

Attractions in Jalandhar

Despite its small size, the city of Jalandhar has a number of intriguing attractions for you to visit. An idea of this can be had from the fact that more and more people are opting for Jalandhar packages. With a tour of the city, you can learn about its history and culture, and meet the Punjabi folk, who are renowned for their lively nature. Keep reading for an overview of the attractions in the city.

Religious Sites

There are numerous temples in Jalandhar as there are mosques, gurdwaras and churches that are a testament to the religious harmony of the locals. The most significant shrine in the city is Devi Talab Mandir, one of the Shakti Peethas, where a body part of Goddess Sati fell as per myths. Believed to be over 200 years old, the temple gets its name from the rectangular tank within the complex. Apart from the sanctum, the other highlight of the shrine is a huge diorama, depicting a snow-clad mountain, Lord Shiva seated on a tiger, Narada in reverence, a four-armed goddess sitting on a crocodile and another goddess standing by a lion.

Another shrine, with its origin going back to the mythical age, is Tulsi Mandir. It is said that the tank at the site was used as a bathing site by a demon, named Jalandhara; the shrine is dedicated to his wife. If you are coming here, then you may also visit temples dedicated to Goddess Annapurna and Lord Shiva nearby. An interesting temple in the city is Shiva Mandir, which was built by a Muslim sultan. This Lodhi-era temple has an Islamic-style entrance; rest of its features are typical of Hindu temple architecture.

Imam Nasir Masjid is an absolute architectural jewel, and you should explore it. The mausoleum, about 800 years old, and the mosque, built around 400 years ago, display Islamic architectural elements like lattice windows, Arabic calligraphy and domes. About 20 km from the city in the town of Kapurthala, lies the renowned Moorish Mosque. Said to be modelled on the Koutoubia Mosque in Morocco, it has its interiors decorated with a range of designs.

Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Museum

One of the best places to learn about the history of Jalandhar and nearby areas is Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Museum. Dedicated to the famous freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh, also known as Shaheed-e-Azam, it is located in the village of Khatkar Kalian, about 50 km from the city. The museum displays photographs and other documents that highlight his and his companions’ efforts in the Indian Freedom Struggle. Here, you can see bones half burnt and newspaper pieces with blood stains that remind of the gruesome fight for independence. The collection also has a copy of the First Lahore Conspiracy Case judgement, containing notes penned down by Bhagat Singh. Another item on display here is a copy of the Geeta, with Bhagat Singh’s signature. The exhibition also features Ajit Singh’s belongings, the pen used for signing Bhagat Singh’s death sentence and Bhagat Singh’s jail diary.

Wonderland Theme Park

If you are coming here with friends or have kids with you, then you can plan an outing to Wonderland Theme Park. Popular among the people of Jalandhar, it has a range or joyrides for kids to have a fun-filled day. Some leisurely rides that kids will enjoy are Bumper Cars, Rambo Train, Hill Queen, Humpty Dumpty, Carousal and Swing chairs. Grown-ups also have options in the form of Jurassic Coaster, Frisbee, Paratrooper, Vortex, Break Dance and Ferris Wheel. The attached water park has three shallow pools, where everyone can dance and enjoy; a Wave Pool with different types of artificial waves; a man-made waterfall; and water slides. There is also a dedicated area, where the latest tunes are played for people to shake a leg.

Pushpa Gujral Science City

Another great site to visit in Jalandhar with India tour packages is Pushpa Gujral Science City. This 72-acre complex has theatres, where AV shows on adventure sports in California as well as climate change are organised. A planetarium, flight and earthquake simulators, laser light theatre and 3-D theatre are other highlights. Galleries on space and aviation, general health, the human body, AIDS, radiology, surgery, pathogens, sports, chemistry, shadows, cyber space, virtual gaming, evolution and defence are a storehouse of information. The place also houses exhibits, related to renewable energy, various scientific principles and dinosaurs.
