Attractions In jammu

Attractions in Jammu

Most people visit Jammu to revel in the cool climate of the Himalayas and admire snow-capped peaks, but the draw of this city goes way beyond that. A storehouse of history and culture, it is a perfect place to learn about the traditions and customs of Kashmiris. There is a plethora of points of interest that can be visited during a tour of the region. This list includes magnificent palaces, imposing forts, significant shrines and insightful museums. Take a look at all the impressive tourist attractions you can visit in Jammu with one of the India tour packages.

Forts and Palaces

The history of Jammu is quite vast, and you can learn about it by visiting numerous forts and palaces. Among the most famous such landmarks is Bahu Fort, believed to be built around 3000 years ago. The Dogra rulers of Kashmir commanded the renovation of the fortress in the 19th century to bring it back to life. The most admirable things to see here are the aesthetic gardens, Bagh-e-Bahu that surround it, and the Bave Wali Mata Mandir, located inside it. This shrine is the venue of the vibrant Bahu Mela, celebrated twice every year.

Another stunning structure established by the Dogra monarchs is the 19th-century Amar Mahal Palace. A visit to the landmark will tell you about the lavish lifestyle of the rulers of that era. Not so long ago, this former royal residence was turned into a museum for the promotion of Indian art and culture. The vast artwork on display here includes stunning paintings by MF Hussain and Laxman Pai.

Set on the banks of the gushing Tawi River, Mubarak Mandi Palace is more than 150 years old. This erstwhile residence of the royal family of Kashmir puts on display different styles of architecture, including Rajasthani, Mughal and European. During your visit, do not miss exploring Pink Hall, which has a museum exhibiting Shah Jahan’s bow.

Shrines

To make your Jammu holidays better, you can also visit numerous shrines that provide a glimpse into the vibrant culture of Jammu. You can pay a visit to the revered Raghunath Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama. Among the largest temple complexes in North India, it has seven shrines, each with its own tower called Shikhara. The complex also has shrines dedicated to the sun god, Lord Shiva and other incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Another religious site in the city is Peer Baba Dargah, built in reverence to the Muslim saint, Budhan Ali Shah. A friend of Guru Gobind Singh, he is said to have lived for around 500 years on the diet of only milk. Not just Muslims, but this place of worship observes devotees of other religions as well.

Purmandal Temple, situated about 20 km from the city centre, is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. There are numerous small Shiva temples in the vicinity of the main shrine that are worth visiting for their frescos. During your trip to Jammu, you should make it a point to visit Peer Kho Cave Temple.

Furthermore, Krimchi village, about 66 km from Jammu, has a temple complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The most intriguing aspect of this site is the Greek influence, which is clearly visible in its architecture, reflecting the rich history of Jammu. While here, do not forget to click pictures of the sculptures of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati. Panchbakhtar Temple, Mahamaya Temple and Dera Baba Banda are three other places where you can seek solace and pay homage.

Picnic Spots

Apart from the above-mentioned, there are several picnic spots in Jammu, where you can head with your family. One of the prominent names on this list is the majestic Mansar Lake. The sparkling waterbody with its marvellous surroundings mesmerises all observers. Many people are unaware of the fact, but Jammu offers aplenty opportunities to travellers to learn about the regional wildlife.

Manda Zoo, located in the heart of the city, is another good place for a family picnic. With a visit to the site, you get the opportunity to come face to face with a variety of fauna species, such as nilgais, porcupines and bears. Furthermore, you can head to Surinsar Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary, about 50 km away. Various kinds of animals, including peafowl, red junglefowl, barking deer, leopards and wild boars, can be spotted on this 9800-hectare property.

With so many points of interest, Jammu proves to be more than just another city in the country.
