A visit to Mathura’s Dwarkadheesh Temple is remarkable on many counts. Located on the eastern banks of River Yamuna, this is a fairly new temple in the holy land of Mathura, which was erected around one fifty years ago by a devotee of Lord Krishna. The temple enshrines the main deity of Lord Dwarkadheesh, an avatar of Lord Krishna seen in a black marble idol named Dwarkanath. With him is the white marble idol of his consort, Sri Radharani. The temple has a large compound with the sanctum sanctorum hemmed in by a magnificently carved Rajasthani style entrance. The doorway is flanked with steep steps leading to the temple courtyard. In the center of the temple courtyard, a platform is built which is lined up with three rows of richly carved pillars, forming a support to the ceiling which is intricately painted. The compound also houses a small temple of Lord Krishna where he can be seen in Vishnu avatar.
