Attractions In mumbai

Attractions in Mumbai

One of the metropolises of India, Mumbai is known as the ‘City of Dreams' as thousands of people come here to make a fortune. It is not just significant from the point of entertainment, but also India tourism, owing to its host of attractions. From massive monuments, pristine beaches, sacred shrines, historical caves and giant forts to museums, the city has lots for vacationers. Read on to know what all you can visit in Mumbai.

Monuments

Built in the 20th century during the British rule to mark the visit of King George V, the Gateway of India is among the top city attractions. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the 85-feet high edifice showcases Indo-Saracenic architecture. In proximity to this structure, The Taj Mahal Palace is a luxury hotel in Mumbai, the eye-catching beauty of which attracts a large number of tourists.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus reflects a blend of classical Indian and Victorian Gothic architectures. Visitors also appreciate the construction style of Mumbai High Court, an imposing Gothic building. At a short stroll from here, the Flora Fountain is a perfect example of Neo-Classical and Gothic design.

Beaches

Visiting Mumbai and not exploring its beaches would be considered a sin by many. The Indian financial capital is set on the western coast of India along the Arabian Sea; hence, has numerous unspoilt beaches. While talking about the seafronts in Mumbai, the very first name that strikes in mind is Juhu Beach. Located in the eponymous suburb, the 6-km long shore buzzes with tourists and the people of Mumbai round the year. The presence of the houses of Bollywood celebrities like Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt in the locality makes the beach more prominent.

For witnessing a perfect sunset, Aksa Beach is the place to be. Frequented by couples, the spot offers a serene setting, away from the hustle-bustle of the city. Chowpatty Beach in the southern part of Mumbai is known for its eateries, open-air massages and horse rides. Marvé Beach, Bandstand Beach, Versova Beach and Madh Island Beach are few more renowned beaches in the metropolis where you can relax.

Shrines

Spread across an area of approximately 4500 sq meters, the famed Haji Ali Dargah is one of the most visited shrines in Mumbai. The Islamic architecture and mirror work of this 85-feet tall mausoleum, combined with its spiritual significance, draw thousands every day. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Siddhivinayak Temple is another prominent sacred place in Mumbai. A Bollywood star, offering prayers at these two shrines, is a common sight.

Often referred to as Mount Mary Church, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount is another must-visit religious site in the city. The best times to visit this Roman Catholic basilica are the feast of Blessed Virgin Mary and Bandra Fair.

Other holy places in Mumbai include Mahalakshmi Temple, Mumba Devi Temple, Shree Balaji Temple, Babulnath Temple, Walkeshwar Temple and Shri Swaminarayan Mandir.

Caves and Forts

Most Mumbai packages include a visit to the caves and forts in and around the megacity. Dating to between the 5th and 7th centuries AD, Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They is a group of five Hindu caves and two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caverns house rock-cut sculptures of Trimurti, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and other deities.

Located in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Kanheri Caves is another group of rock-cut monuments. Here, you will see historical paintings, inscriptions and sculptures. Equally popular are Mahakali Caves, situated in the eastern suburb of Andheri. Tourists can also visit Madh Fort, constructed by Portuguese, and Worli Fort built by the British. Sewri Fort, Mahim Fort, Dharavi Fort and Bandra Fort are a few more famous fortresses here.

Museums

Named after the valiant Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya exhibits an excellent collection of paintings, terracotta figurines, ancient artworks, sculptures and other artefacts. To get an insight into the culture of Mumbai, you can visit the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, which showcases clay figurines, silver and copper ware, archaeological finds and a manuscript of Hatim Tai. Built in 1952, the Jehangir Art Gallery is a hub for art lovers. Amazing works of local painters and artists is on display and sale here. The Nehru Planetarium and the National Gallery of Modern Art are other prominent museums in the city.

With all these options to explore, Mumbai will surely lure you again.
