The city has a rich history and is even a part of the Mahabharata, one of the most famous epics of Indian history. It is mentioned as the capital of Panchal rulers and the birthplace of Draupadi, one of the main characters in the classic. The city was originally founded in 1537 by Katehriya Rajput and the foundation of the modern city was established by Mukrand Rai, in 1657. After passing through the reign of Mughals and Rohillas, it was captured by the British. Bareilly served as the district capital and the British built links from Bareilly to other cities like Delhi, Lucknow etc. The various religious shrines and mosques were continuously being built along this timeline. Post independence, the city’s economic growth continued at a high rate. Bareilly is a major centre for furniture manufacturing, especially in cane furniture and trade in cereal, cotton and sugar. This vibrant city is also known as “Bans-Bareilly” and though many attribute it to the city being the hub of cane(bans) furniture production, it was named so after the two princes Bansaldev and Baraldev, the sons of Jagat Singh Katehriya, who founded the city in 1537.
