The city of Barmer was formerly called Mallinath and was named after Rao Salkha’s son. In fact, Mallinath is also a Rajput God, who is worshiped even now in Barmer. Later on, the region in and around River Luni was named Malani derived from ‘Mallinath’. The region had witnessed the rule of several dynasties such as Rajputs and the Delhi Sultanate. \nIn ancient times, the border of the city extended to several nearby areas such as Kiradu, Khed, Pachpadra, Sheo, Jasol, Mallani, Tilwara, and Balotara. Later on the name ‘Barmer’ or ‘Balmer’ was given by the British in the 18th century when the region came in the hands of the Superintendent of the East India Company in 1836. In 1891, the city became a part of the Jodhpur state. In 1947, after India acquired Independence, both Barmer and Jodhpur became an essential part of Rajasthan.
