One of the oldest cities of India, Bathinda is famous as a historical and religious centre and dates back to 7000 BC with evidence of human habitats and townships. However, the present city of Bathinda was established by Bala Rao Bhatti, a Bhati Rajput king who ruled Punjab in the 6th century A.D. As the years passed by, the rulers kept changing and many other dynasties have ruled the city. Mahmud of Ghazni, Prithvi Raj Chauhan, Muhammad Ghori, etc. are a few names among them. Another impressive fact is that India’s first empress, Razia Sultana who ruled Bathinda, was later captured and held captive in Bathinda’s fort. It is also inspiring to know that the people of Bathinda had stood up numerous times in the past, against foreign rulers and the British. With the dawn of India’s independence, Bathinda has continued to develop as a full-fledged district and is now home to two thermal plants, an oil refinery and many other industries.
