Bhubaneswar lies in the eastern coastal plains at an elevation of 45 m (148 ft) above sea level, along the axis of the Eastern Ghat Mountains. The northern boundary of the city is marked by the Mahanadi river. It is also bounded by the Daya River and the Kuakhai River on the south and east respectively. Bhubaneswar is divided into eastern lowlands and western uplands topographically. Some hillocks can be found in the western and northern parts. It is surrounded by a dense canopy of thick green forests like Nandankanan and Chandaka. On the northern outskirts, by the Kanjia Lake, rich biodiversity is found. This is also a famous wetland of the nation.
