Spread over an area of 183 square km the Bokaro Steel City is surrounded by rivers and hills all around. Bokaro was developed on the southern bank of River Damoda, along with one of its tributaries Garga, which drains the southern and eastern parts of the city. Towards the north, the high ranges of Parasnath Hills crown the Bokaro city while it is surrounded by the Satanpur hills in the south, just beyond the Garga River. Bokaro city also has two man-made cooling ponds, that are used to make steel.
