Chandigarh, which is now the capital city of two states, Punjab and Haryana, is known to have been home to the “Harappans” around 8000 years ago. The “Harappans” are known to be among the earliest civilizations. Even in medieval times, the city was recorded as a prosperous place and after India got its independence in 1947, the then “British-Punjab” was split into two states, one in Pakistan and one in India. Chandigarh was chosen to be the capital of the Punjab state in India. India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru enthusiastically encouraged the rise of the city and Chandigarh is India’s first-ever planned city. The master plan of the territory was laid down by the American architect Albert Mayer, along with a Polish-born architect Matthew Nowicki. However, following Nowicki’s untimely death, the French architect Le Corbusier resumed the task of completing the layout and designed the buildings of Chandigarh. He created Chandigarh as a city of “Sun, Space and Verdure', which can be seen true in all aspects today.
