Situated at the foothills of the Sivalik range of the magnificent Himalayas, Chandigarh has an average elevation of around 320m (1053 ft) and encompasses an area of approximately 114 sq km (44 sq mi). The city is the capital of two states of India, Punjab and Haryana and is also a Union Territory. Chandigarh lies on the northern plains and is known to have sizeable, flat and fertile lands.
