Cochin map shows that it is situated on the southwest coast of India. The city has an area of 94.88 sq km. The city is at the sea level, with around 48 km of coastline. While the west is marked by the Laccadive Sea, the eastern side is urbanized. Cochin is at the mouth of the seven major rivers which originate from the Western Ghats and traverse across Kerala’s lowlands, midlands and coastal areas, to finally drain out into the Arabian Sea. The city spans over a range of backwaters, plenty of islands and a part of the mainland. Sediments such as alluvium, teri’s, brown sands etc. are found in the soil of this coastal city. Mangrove formations and coconut trees are common here and the backwaters contain many variety of fishes.
