Coimbatore and the surrounding regions were ruled by mighty dynasties such as Cheras, in the Sangam period between the 1st and the 4th centuries CE and Cholas, in the 10th century. The region was right in the middle of a Roman trade route and the Cholas enhanced it by building more highways. By the 15th century, it was conquered by the Vijayanagara Empire, followed by the “Madurai Nayaks”. The Coimbatore region was later included in the Kingdom of Mysore but after Tipu Sultan was defeated by the British East India Company, the city got annexed to the Madras Presidency, in 1799. The region played a noteworthy role in the independence struggle of India and Mahatma Gandhi had visited the city thrice. In the early 19th century, Coimbatore saw a boom in the textile industry and post-independence, this was further encouraged and the city witnessed a rapid growth due to industrialisation. Currently, it is a major centre for textiles, information technology, education, healthcare and manufacturing sector, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
