The indigenous people of Dharamshala are known as Gaddis and traditionally led nomadic and semi nomadic transhumant lifestyle. They follow the Hindu religion. Upper Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj is mainly a Tibetan community, with the majority of people following Tibetan Buddhism. The holy residence of the Dalai Lama is situated here, along with the Tibetan government-in-exile. Dharamshala attracts a lot of travellers and tourists who come and live here for weeks, months and even years. The local people are generally warm-hearted and welcoming towards tourists.
