The history of Erode is vast and rich. The name Erode is also associated with the Chola temple and means ‘wet skull’. This region was once under the control of many different dynasties such as the Cheras, the Pandyas and even the Cholas. \nWhile the town of Erode flourished under the rule of Hyder Ali in the 18th century and became home to hundreds of people, after the wars of the Marathas, Mysore and the British rule, the land and region began to suffer and people began to leave the town of Erode. After the British had taken control, people began finding it safe to return to Erode and the land flourished once again and became an agricultural trade centre due to the fertile soils. The temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva hold inscriptions that also indicate how important Erode was back in the tenth century as well.
