The only airport in the state of Sikkim is at Pakyong and is still under construction. Currently, Bagdogra Airport, in the state of West Bengal, serves all the travellers to Sikkim. This airport is under the Indian Air Force and has a civil enclave. It is well-connected to all the major cities in India like Delhi, Guwahati, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The major airlines flying these routes are Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Vistara and Jet Airways. Bagdogra Airport is also connected to international cities like Bangkok, Thimpu and Paro, by Druk Air. Travellers from other parts of the world can fly in to Delhi or Mumbai and board a connecting flight to Bagdogra. There are daily helicopter flights to Gangtok, from this airport. Taxi and bus services are also available.

The national highway 31A links Gangtok with the neighbouring cities of Siliguri, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. There are frequent bus services interconnecting these cities. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) operates many buses on these routes. Private buses like Apsara Travels also ply on these roads. Travellers from other parts of the country need to reach any of these cities first, to catch a bus to Gangtok.

Travel to this city by road is a long one, but it also offers travellers mesmerizing scenery to feast their eyes on. During the winter and monsoon seasons, landslides are a common occurrence in this part of the world. So be prepared for delays on the road, if travelling during this time and consequently, tourists are advised to carry some food and water for the journey.
The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP), in Siliguri, is the closest railway station to Gangtok. Several trains pass through this station from different cities in the country like New Delhi, Patna, Chennai, Amritsar, Udaipur, Ranchi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Trivandrum etc. There are many buses and prepaid taxis available from the station to Gangtok.
