The people of Goa are called Goans. They are a very friendly and peace-loving folk. The majority of the people follow Hinduism and are divided into many castes and sub-castes known as ‘Jatis’. The next predominant community is the Roman Catholic Christian community, followed by a minority of Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains. Being an erstwhile Portuguese colony, the dressing style of Goans are influenced a lot by the west. Women usually wear cotton dresses, shorts and cotton blouses. The men tend to wear pants and cotton shirts. Saree and traditional dhothis are worn on special occasions.
