Guwahati is located in the state of Assam in northeast India. The capital of the state, Dispur, also lies in Guwahati. The city lies between Brahmaputra river and Shillong plateau. Brahmaputra is one of the largest rivers in the world. The elevation of the city is 55.5 metres and it covers an area of 556 sq. km. The city is surrounded by Nilachal Hill to the west, Chitrachal Hill to the north and Narakasur Hill to the south. It is divided into two parts- South Guwahati and North Guwahati. The city is blessed with abundant natural resources which include fertile lands, rivers and forest reserves. Forests that come under Guwahati Municipal Corporation are Rani and Garbhanga forests. Oil and gas are the most important mineral reserves. Dipor Bil is a permanent freshwater lake and lies to the south-west of the city.
