Gwalior is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh and falls in the Bundelkhand area. It lies 448 km from the state capital of Bhopal and 329 km from the national capital of New Delhi. The city spans across an area of 362 sq. km and is part of the Chambal river valley. The elevation of Gwalior is 196 m (643 ft) above sea level and it is landlocked on all sides, by rocky hills. The area is rich in minerals and some of the minerals found here are rock phosphate, granite, marble, slate, quartz and fire clay. Several rivers pass through the district, with Chambal River being the most notable one. Water reservoirs in Gwalior are Pagara, Tighara and Katwal. The trees in the forests near the city, are used to harvest timber. Herbal plants used in medicines are also found here.
