Jaisalmer is located in the state of Rajasthan and covers an area of 5 sq. km. It is situated at a height of 225 m (738 ft) above sea level. It lies 575 kilometres (357 mi) west to the state capital of Jaipur. The international border with Pakistan is located at the west and south-west of Jaisalmer, and is the longest border in the country, stretching to a length of 471 km (293 mi). The district lies in the Thar Desert which is sandy and dry. The area is barren and has several sand dunes. There is no river in the district and underground water table is very low. Among the sparse vegetation, flora such as ‘jal’, ‘neem’ and ‘babul’ can be found. Sheep, camel, goat and cow are among the fauna found here.
