The people of Jaisalmer are friendly and jovial in nature. They lead a simple life and are very content and joyful. They dress in brightly coloured traditional clothes, with silver and brass jewellery. Women dress in ‘Ghaghara choli’, saree with ‘odhni’, a traditional cloth worn with Ghaghara, and ‘Lehenga’. Men wear ‘khol’, ‘pachewara’, ‘bugatari’ and ‘banda’. They also wear dhoti with ‘angrakhi’ or ‘jhari’, a type of jacket. Traditional headgear for men, such as ‘pagri’ and ‘saafa’ are also popular. The city has a population of 65,471. Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity and Islam are the prominent religions.
