Jammu is named after the name of the ruler, Jambulochan who founded the city and named it as Jambupur. Later the name got changed to Jammu. History states that this city was founded in the 14th century BC. The excavation near Akhnoor, that is situated 32 kilometres from the Jammu city, provides the evidence that Jammu was a part of Harappan civilization. The remnants from Maurya, Kushana, Gupta and Kushanshahs empire has been found in this place. After 480 CE, the area was dominated by Hepthalites, Shahis, and Ghaznavids. Before the British, Mughals and Sikhs also ruled this city. Jammu revived its ancient glory under the Dogra rule. After the partition of India, Jammu continued to be a beautiful part of India and the winter capital of the state.
