Jodhpur is located in the western part of the state of Rajasthan and covers an area of 78.6 sq. km (30.3 sq. mi). The elevation of the city is 231 m (758 ft) above sea level. The area comes under the arid zone of Rajasthan, and part of the area of the Thar Desert lies in the district. Luni River and Mithri River are the main rives that pass through the district, but they contain saline water. Hence, Groundwater is the main source of water in Jodhpur. Kailana Tank and Ummed Sagar are prominent water reservoirs. The soil texture is considered as sandy and loamy and the area is rich in sandstone and limestone. A very small percentage of the land is covered with forests, where only scrubs and thorny bushes can be found. Jackal, jungle cat, black buck, etc. are the main species of fauna found here.
