The culture of Cochin has been continuously evolving with the influence of Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese and British, who had visited Cochin in the erstwhile years. There are several traditional aspects unique to Cochin and the state it resides, Kerala. “Kathakali”, an ancient form of dance noted for its elaborate costumes, colourful make-up, detailed gestures and graceful body movements, is one such example. Malayalam literature is another integral part of the culture of Cochin. The city has seen some pioneers in this field and has always honoured them. Cochin is also home to a number of arts and crafts like rosewood carvings of elephants, tigers, deer etc. and artefacts made of bamboo . Every year, during the last ten days of December, the Cochin Carnival is celebrated at Fort Cochin. Dirt bike races, beach volley ball and firework displays are held as part of the festivities. The entire Fort Kochi is decked up for the carnival. The culinary delights of Cochin are known to be scrumptious. Seafood items are the most-loved food items among the locals. The cuisine is characterised by copious usage of coconut and aromatic spices.
