Kolkata’s actual factual history began with the arrival of East India Company in Bengal. Job Charnock, a British administrator of the Company, is referred as the founding father of the city. Kolkata evolved out of three villages; Kalikata, the fishing village, Sutanuti, a river-side weaver’s village and Gobindapur. Bengal was initially ruled by the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud-Daulah. Kolkata has also undergone the rule of Zamindars. In 1757, Robert Clive, the Commander in Chief of British India, captured Kolkata, erstwhile Calcutta, took complete control of the city and made it the commercial capital of British India. Ever since then Kolkata has gradually developed in all spheres and have evolved as one of the major metropolises of India.
