Two important aspects of the Kollam culture are its music and dance, owing to which dance and music events are organized in plenty throughout the year. The ancient dance form of Kathakali has long been popular in this region. Its newer version, which was created by a popular classical dance named Kottarakkara Thampuran, is called Ramanattam. Thampuran even made changes in the dance form of Krishnanattam by incorporating Malayalam instead of Sanskrit so that the local populace could better comprehend this remarkable dance form. Other dance forms popular in Kollam include Koothu, Ottamthullal and Kaikottikali. Folk musc performances such as Kalyana Pattukal, Vadakkan Pattukal, Mappila Pattukal, and Thekkan Pattukal are commonly practised in Kollam. The classical form of singing called the Sopanasangeetham is popular in the city. \nLiterature is also an important part of Kollam’s culture. Kollam was once a prominent centre for culture and learning and attracted notable scholars from many parts of South India. Two literary works of historical importance are the 14th-century contributions of Leelathilakam and Unnuneeli Sandesam.
