Ladakh is a high-altitude desert plateau in Kashmir, located at a height of 9,800 feet. It is a land-locked region encompassed by Himalayan and Karakoram ranges and also incorporates a part of upper Indus River Valley. The Indus river forms the backbone of Ladakh. Most of the historical and modern towns of Ladakh like Shey, Leh, Basgo and many more are situated near the Indus River. The Ladakh range has no major peaks; the average height of the peaks is little less than 6000 metres. There are few important passes whose average height is less than 5000 metres. Dras, Suru and Zanskar Valley are located in the northern flank of the Himalayan Ranges in Ladakh. Nubra Valley and the Khardung La pass are the most prominent relief features of Ladakh.
