Ludhiana is located in the state of Punjab in northern India. It is located at an elevation of 262 m (860 ft.) and covers an area of 310 sq. km (120 sq. mi). The city is divided into two parts, the old city and the new city. The Sutlej river used to flow at the north and west of the city, before 1785. Hence, the land dips steeply at that region. The banks of the river, housed the Old Fort. The land formation consists of yellow sandstone and granite, which forms small plateaus, hillocks and dips. The flora consists of Eucalyptus, Gulmohars and Jacarandas. The Old City has virtually no vegetation or parks, except for a few Pipal trees. The state capital city of Chandigarh is 100 km away from Ludhiana, whereas the national capital city of New Delhi is 310 km away.
