After the adoption of democracy in India in 1947, the city mostly elected members of the Indian National Congress as Members of parliament for 30 years up till 1977. \nAfter Indira Gandhi imposed a questionable Emergency on the country in 1975, the public was disgruntled with her Congress party and discarded its candidates for two general elections. However, upon the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, a congress candidate was elected in a wave of sympathy.\nAfter that, the congress never won this constituency because of the skilful social engineering done by other political parties. For the past 20 years, it has been a fiefdom of the Samajwadi party which has won this parliament seat for the past eight elections. Members of the party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family have mostly held this seat.
